World Quest

DOS 1993
World Quest is a horizontal scrolling shooter shareware. The object of the game is to destroy defense bases set up by an unspecified alien race throughout the levels, and rescue captive humans. Although most of the opposition the player faces consists of fixed defenses firing various projectiles, rather than enemy ships, there are also end-of-level bosses. The player's ship can move freely forward, up and down, and also backward: although the screen automatically scrolls forward, it allows backward movement up to a certain point. The ship is equipped with missiles and bombs, and random power-ups that can be acquired from destroyed alien installations can provide the ability to fire additional missiles backwards, upwards or at a 45-degree angle above or below the player's ship. The initial version of World Quest included 10 worlds (levels), with only the first four available in the unregistered shareware version. The total number of worlds was increased to 15 in version 2.0. In addition, the registered game offers the option to access all levels and activate the unlimited lives cheat using the secret password.
