Break It

DOS 1995
Break It is a variant of Breakout for one or two players that more or less sticks to the original rules. The objective of each level is to clear the playing field of all destructible bricks with a ball that bounces on a paddle that the player moves horizontally at the bottom of the screen. If the ball falls off the screen, one point is subtracted from the number of 'lives' or 'tries' the player has (starting with five) and a new ball appears to continue playing. The bricks range from those that break as soon as the ball hits them, to those that take more than one hit to break (changing color as they are hit), to completely indestructible obstacles. Some bricks drop bonuses that fall, and if the player 'catches' such a bonus with the shovel, they can gain a temporary advantage, including a weapon that can be fired from the shovel to destroy bricks, an increase in the size of the shovel, an extra life, and so on. However, certain bonuses have an adverse effect (reversing the left and right controls of the shovel, discoloring the playing field, or even taking away a life point). Typical of the genre, the game doesn't explain which bonuses do what, leaving the player to figure it out for themselves. Also, sometimes bricks drop surprise bonuses that look like question marks, the effect of which can only be discovered after picking them up. What makes Break It different from many other similar games is that temporary bonuses cannot accumulate: each time a new bonus is collected, any current (dis)bonuses that are in effect will expire. So, for example, if the player gets an increase in palette size, but then picks up the missile weapon bonus, the palette will shrink to the original size. This may limit the player's resources, but it also allows to cancel any negative effects by choosing a new bonus. Two users can play on the same screen, with their movement restricted to the left and right sides of the playing field. A joystick is required for the second player, as the first player's paddle can only be controlled with the mouse, not the keyboard. Break It was distributed as shareware. Registered users received 100 additional levels and a level editor for the game.

Cyber Riders

DOS 1992
In the gaming world of the 1990s, there was one game that stood out from the rest in terms of graphics, gameplay, and overall experience - Cyber Riders. Released in 1992 by SoftServ, this DOS game took the world by storm and became a cult classic among gamers. Set in a futuristic world, Cyber Riders allowed players to enter the adrenaline-pumping world of underground cyber racing. The game boasted impressive graphics for its time, with detailed landscapes and race tracks that were way ahead of its predecessors. And unlike other games of its time, Cyber Riders had a unique storyline that immersed players in a dystopian universe, where the only way to survive was to win at these illegal cyber races. The gameplay of Cyber Riders was simple yet addictive. Players had to navigate their high-powered, cybernetic bikes through treacherous terrains, using boosters and special weapons to defeat opponents and cross the finish line first. However, what made this game stand out was its customization feature. Players could upgrade their bikes with advanced technology, such as force fields, lasers, and even wings, making the races even more intense and challenging. One of the most impressive features of Cyber Riders was its multiplayer option. Players could compete against each other in split-screen mode, adding a whole new dimension to the game. This feature allowed friends to battle it out in real-time, making Cyber Riders a hit at gaming parties and LAN gatherings. Besides its gameplay and graphics, Cyber Riders also had a killer soundtrack that perfectly complemented the fast-paced races. Composed by acclaimed musician, Barry Leitch, the game's soundtrack captured the essence of the game, making it an unforgettable experience for players. The success of Cyber Riders paved the way for a sequel, Cyber Riders 2, which was released in 1994. The sequel featured improved graphics, a new storyline, and even more customization options, further solidifying its place as one of the top DOS games of the 90s. Even today, Cyber Riders and its sequel are remembered fondly by gamers around the world, with many still playing it through emulators or on original hardware.
