Gameplay Dreadnaught

Description Dreadnaught

When it comes to classic action games of the Atari 8-bit console, Dreadnaught stands out amongst the pack. Released in 1990, Dreadnaught is a science fiction shoot-em-up game that has left an imprint on those who have experienced its twitch-based, bullet-hell awesomeness.

The concept of the game is, in short, the destruction of enemy ships before you become a victim yourself. Dreadnaught uses the standard 8-way directional shooter control system, utilising the joystick for manoeuvres. Players have the choice to move up, down, left, right and diagonally. In addition to shooting threats, Dreadnaught also adds a unique game mechanic – the shield augmenter. This allows players to plan their movements more strategically, bolstering their defense by first collecting a specific number of stars before being able to activate the shield.

The visual and audio experience of Dreadnaught adds a distinct level of atmosphere that pulls players into the action. The presentation of the game is simple yet effective: there are a handful of colours that line the retro 80’s inspired soundtrack, as well as a range of pixelated but well-animated images of enemy ship sprites. The audio backdrop ranges from the standard 8bit chiptune audio reminiscent of the 80’s arcade machines to much more rugged and faster paced music that cuts the tension as you joust against enemy craft.

Dreadnaught’s enemies range from robots, alien vessels, space fighters and capital ships, betwixt several original bosses. As your journey progresses and the level of difficulty increases, so do the amount of enemies. It’s also worth noting that Dreadnaught keeps track of your score which adds an incentive to improve your gaming performance as you navigate the on-screen carnage.

Exhilarating and wonderfully designed, Dreadnaught is certainly an experience that will please those looking for a trip down memory lane that’s filled with nostalgia and adrenaline-pumping action. Those ready to take a dive into the classic Atari 8-bit shooter can enjoy the intense battles and nostalgia that could only be provided at the dawn of the 90’s.
