Description Ducks
Ducks is an old shareware, now freeware clone of Lemmings for DOS. Instead of clearing a path to a portal for the green creatures, the player controls a green duck, the leader of Ducks who must be guided to a rocket. By clicking and holding the right mouse button anywhere on the playing field, the leader moves toward it. When the green duck is close enough to the orange Ducks, they start following him. Moving the mouse while holding down the button causes the green duck to change direction accordingly. The rocket has a number on top, indicating the number of Ducks needed for it to take off.
Numerous hazards scattered throughout the levels kill the Ducks. Instead of Lemmings' more aseptic approach to violence, the deaths in Ducks are quite gory, with the animals exploding and their blood splattering nearby surfaces. A slimy monster roams some levels and devours birds, which can also be killed by spikes, fans, electric lightning, and long drops. Switches turn electric arcs off and on, but they can only be activated by the leader, and only once per level. The ESC button causes them to commit suicide, useful for getting out of an unsolvable level by wrong actions.
Several tools help to clear the way to the rocket. They appear as icons at the bottom of the screen, and can be toggled with the arrow key and deployed with the left mouse button. The bomb explodes the stage, removing pieces of the stage each time. Horizontal bridges and diagonal ladders help the Ducks safely cross chasms and dangerous environments. The balloon acts like the bomb, but it goes up instead of falling. The stop signs make the orange Ducks stop instead of walking into deadly devices and locations. Bricks can be placed on top of each other, to manually build bridges. Teleportation transports the leader anywhere in the level. Seagulls and flying saucers replace the leader, guiding the birds and automatically moving back and forth (the saucer also goes up and down).
A level editor is available as an optional download from the developer's site.
