Endless

Endless is a video game in the action genre developed by Radarsoft BV and published by N.V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken originally released in 1986. It is currently playable on MSX.

Developed and released in 1986 by Konami and Imagineer, Endless was a great example of the ease with which console players could get their hands on some quality strategy and tactics-based gaming.

Endless brought with it the then-popular inspiredIsometric 3D rendering that was becoming commonplace on personal computers of the age and was highly praised for its spate of features. Players are called upon to defend their home base from a continuous onslaught of enemy forces by flying recon jets, firing the occasional shot with a tank, or dispatching submarines.

Progress is tracked through a Command Center, which serves as both the players' refuge and the point from which orders can be issued. As if that weren't enough, the Command Center plays host to a number of NPCs, each with their own unique set of tasks or missions to complete. There are also a number of "Special Powers" that can be acquired as the game progresses; these are activated at the command of the player and can provide a much-needed boost to any plan of attack.

Where Endless truly stands apart from other games of the era is its use of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enemy forces. The AI commands the troops of the enemy army and responds to the players' countermeasures with tactics of its own. This made Endless a more challenging and engaging experience than other titles of the time, and added an extra layer of complexity to the tactics employed.

Endless is a great example of the kind of early video game that was far ahead of its time. Its innovative AI implementation made it stand out from the competition, and its plethora of features and tactics set it apart from others of the genre. A definite must-play for anyone looking for some tense tactical gaming.
