Enigma

Enigma is a video game in the puzzle genre developed by Freeverse, Inc. and published by Freeverse, Inc. originally released in 1998. It is currently playable on Windows 3.x.

A great Arkanoid/Breakout clone from Geckosoft with some nice twists to the familiar theme of bouncing the ball to destroy the blocks.

The highlights of Enigma are the large number of levels (over 150) and the five interesting 'sub-games' that have nothing to do with the main game, but can provide extra elements such as extra lives. The basic gameplay is typical Arkanoid: the main screen consists of a wall of blocks at the top and a bat at the bottom. The score, level and collection status appear at the bottom of the screen. With the mouse, you must control the bat to prevent the ball from bouncing to the bottom of the screen. When the ball hits a normal block, the block is destroyed and there is a chance that a nasty object or a bonus object will appear. After a certain number of levels, you will be able to collect a 'subgame', after which you will move on to one of five subgames of Enigma, each stranger than the last. When you pick up the subgame, the screen will change to the 'betting screen' and then to a randomly selected subgame. You will be shown simple instructions on how to play. I won't spoil the surprises, but suffice to say that the subgames are great fun to play, and provide a great diversion from the main action. With great graphics, intuitive controls, and cool subgames, Enigma is one of the best Arkanoid clones you'll find. The game was first released as shareware, but here you can download the full registered version since Geckosoft disappeared years ago - and best of all, the authors released the game as freeware in 2005. Highly recommended.
