Description Finite Zone

Finite Zone places the player in control of a lone survey pilot trapped within a sealed region of space known as the Finite Zone. Navigation beacons have failed, supply stations are inactive, and the surrounding sector is divided into a series of unstable fields. The objective is to reactivate the six boundary gates and reach the central control station before the craft’s energy reserve is exhausted. Each gate is protected by a different arrangement of hazards, requiring exploration, careful fuel management, and the recovery of access codes from abandoned installations.

The game combines overhead navigation with close-range action sequences. On the sector map, the craft moves across a square grid of asteroid belts, debris clouds, minefields, and relay stations. Fuel and shield power diminish continuously while the ship is in motion, although power cells can be collected from derelict platforms. Entering a hostile area changes the display to a scrolling combat view, where the pilot must steer between incoming fire and launch missiles at patrol drones. Ammunition is limited, and shots can also be used to destroy obstructions blocking narrow routes. Docking at a functioning station restores part of the shield but may consume valuable time.

Every section of the Finite Zone has its own operating conditions. Some fields reverse the ship’s controls at regular intervals, while others conceal passages until their signal towers have been disabled. Magnetic corridors pull the craft toward walls, and radiation sectors gradually weaken the hull unless a stabilizer module has been installed. Modules are found in different locations and can be fitted between missions, allowing the player to improve acceleration, shield capacity, scanner range, or weapon output. Only a limited number can be carried, making equipment selection an important part of each attempt.

The visual presentation uses a dark, sharply defined display dominated by black space, luminous grid lines, and compact blocks of blue, green, amber, and red. The map is built from geometric symbols that identify stations, hazards, gates, and unexplored sectors, while combat scenes use bright sprites against fast-moving star fields. Explosions break into small square fragments, and damaged craft flash in alternating colors before disintegrating. A status panel permanently shows fuel, hull strength, shield charge, weapon inventory, and the number of gates still awaiting activation.

Audio is spare and functional, with a steady electronic pulse accompanying navigation and heavier tones marking combat encounters. Radar contacts produce short rising signals, warning sirens sound when fuel or hull strength is low, and successful docking is confirmed by a sequence of descending notes. The Finite Zone demands measured progress rather than continuous attack. Players who rush through open sectors may reach the gates quickly but lack the power to survive the final defenses, while thorough explorers can uncover safer routes and stronger equipment. Its fixed boundaries, limited resources, and changing field conditions give every decision immediate importance.
