Flightmare

Flightmare is a video game in the action genre and published by Peter Adams originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on DOS.

One of the first shareware games (although you don't get additional gameplay features when you register), Flightmare lets you pilot a propeller plane to fight off a gang of vandals before they reach your city.

Although the game was made long before the advent of 3D graphics, it represents the three-dimensional dimension in an ingenious way: allowing you to manipulate the plane in both horizontal and vertical viewpoints. While this makes it harder for an enemy to hit you because he must be aligned with you in both views, it also makes it harder for YOU to hit your enemies.

Aligning both the side and top views to connect a shot is a challenging requirement that seems almost impossible to do until you get a lot of practice. However, once you get the hang of it, you'll find Flightmare an enjoyable little gem.

Like Sopwith, the game is more sophisticated than it sounds. You must refuel from time to time with an airship, keep an eye on your ammo, and finish the level before time runs out. If you like Sopwith, you'll find Flightmare an equally captivating and addictive game.
