Flock!

Flock! is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Proper Games LTD and published by 1C Company originally released in 2009. It is currently playable on Windows.

In Flock!, the player pilots a small alien craft across the countryside, guiding groups of farm animals toward the waiting mothership. Each stage sets a target number of creatures to rescue, turning a simple trip across the fields into a puzzle of routes, obstacles and animal behavior. Sheep, cows, chickens and pigs all take part, and their differing reactions mean that a method that works for one group may not suit another. Stragglers can be rounded up along the way, but the flock must reach the landing area before the craft can depart.

The craft’s tractor beam is the main tool for shaping the animals’ progress. Its influence can encourage them away from danger or steer them around barriers, while lifting and moving objects can open a path or create a crossing. The beam requires careful handling: animals may scatter if startled, and a hurried correction can send them toward hazards instead of safety. Players must read the terrain, anticipate the flock’s movement and keep the creatures together as they respond to the craft and to one another.

The countryside is arranged as a succession of compact, self-contained challenges. Fences, water, cliffs and other natural or farmyard obstacles complicate otherwise direct routes, while switches and movable objects introduce additional ways to alter the landscape. A level may call for a detour around an impassable stretch or a makeshift route across it, and the animals’ own habits can make each solution less predictable than it first appears. As the stages progress, the layouts ask for more precise control and more thoughtful use of the beam.

Bright, stylised scenery gives the game a playful rural character. Rolling fields, wooded patches and farm structures are presented from an angled viewpoint that keeps the flock and its surroundings in clear view. The animals are rounded and expressive, and their sudden turns, bunching and dispersal provide much of the action’s comic appeal. The alien craft stands out against the familiar landscape, lending the rescue mission a light science-fiction twist without changing the relaxed, storybook tone.

A cheerful musical score accompanies the journey, with bleats, clucks and other animal calls mixing with the hum and effects of the craft’s beam. The sound helps signal the flock’s reactions while reinforcing the game’s easygoing atmosphere. Flock! is approachable at first, but its later stages reward patience and observation: success depends less on speed than on understanding how each group moves and guiding it safely through the countryside. The result is a gentle puzzle adventure built around the satisfying task of bringing a scattered flock home.
