Flying Saucer

Flying Saucer is a video game in the action genre developed by PostLinear Entertainment and published by Software 2000 originally released in 1998. It is currently playable on Windows.

Flying Saucer is one of the most original flight simulators ever made, but unfortunately it was never released because the developer PostLinear went under shortly after finishing the game.

Instead of the usual theme of flying a modern airplane, Flying Saucer lets you play with an alien ship, something that many flight simulator fans always wanted to try ;) And it's not an arcade game either: the alien ship is carefully modeled, with reasonable flight dynamics and difficult handling that takes some getting used to. The story, though far-fetched, sets the stage for the game: your girlfriend is abducted before your eyes by a menacing alien ship, which takes off and disappears into the night. You have no choice but to do what every desperate boyfriend should do in such a situation (imagine heavy sarcasm): sneak into the top-secret Area 51, in a remote desert, and steal one of the Flying Saucers that the U. S. government is hiding from the public. Your task is to learn to pilot this ridiculous-looking craft (flat, saucer-shaped . . . straight out of 1950s movies), and track down the dastardly ship that kidnapped your girlfriend. Of course, the government is also on your trail . . Although the saucer looks like a simple Frisbee, it takes a lot of patience and effort to learn to fly it properly. Since no one has apparently flown one of these devices in real life, the designers took some liberties in imagining how the saucer might work. It looks reasonably realistic, with just enough 'alien' touches to add to the atmosphere. A word of advice from me: overcorrection means almost certain death in the game. Trust me ;) The fun is not limited to piloting the saucer. Inside the dull gray exterior are cool alien gadgets, like lasers, missiles, targeting equipment, and a unique control system that gives you a good reason to make use of the training mission before getting your hands dirty doing what the Flying Saucers do best: abducting hillbillies. Yes, you can abduct people and other things, and the ship's computer will even analyze what you've successfully abducted. The descriptions are a lot of fun and add greatly to the gameplay experience. Although the game is mission-based, you have a reasonable amount of freedom to roam around beautiful 3D landscapes in most levels, abducting everything you see ;)

Overall, Flying Saucer is certainly a fresh breeze in the flight simulator genre. You don't have to be an aviation nut to enjoy scaring the locals with your alien presence, although aviation nuts will find some reasonable realistic touches that keep the game from being a mere shooter. The missions are nice and varied, and the cartoon intro and cutscenes are very well done. Two thumbs up, way up!

Note: Although a CD-rip version exists when the game was 'leaked' to various warez groups, the full CD version was never seen . . . until now, of course.
