Gate is a video game in the action genre developed by Bright Software and published by Seven Hills Software Corp. originally released in 1991. It is currently playable on Apple IIgs.
The pioneering video game Gate was released on the Apple IIgs in 1991 and was met with much fanfare by gamers of the day. Developed by Satellaview, the game featured an eerie post-apocalyptic setting where the player had to venture through a haunted city searching for a missing daughter. What set the game apart from other releases of the time was its exceptional graphics, unique atmosphere, and intricate level design.
Players took on the role of Sheliak, a mysterious and long-bearded figure who searches the city alone for the girl. Unrelenting ghouls, monsters, and other strange entities hounded Sheliak as he scours the environment in turn-based action. Not only did the game reward caution and strategy, but also speed and accuracy, as progress was punctuated by intense bouts of time-limited action.
The presentation of Gate possessed a macabre beauty. Scenes were evocatively painted in dull blues and greys, with characters pixelated in horror. Every setting was different and full of secrets, with equippable relics and hidden passageways providing much of the challenge and rewards.
Specially tailored background music enhanced the experience, changing in tempo and tonality to suit each part of the game. The intense soundtrack marked the player’s steps, staying the same as enemies came out of the shadows.
Gate was well received by Apple IIgs gamers, and a sequel, simply titled Gate II, was released within months. For its impressive visuals, eerie atmosphere, and immersive soundtrack, this game is best remembered as a technical feat and a gaming milestone.
