GNU Chess

GNU Chess is a video game in the strategy genre originally released in 1994. It is currently playable on Atari ST.

GNU Chess is a free, fully functional chess program that can play against a human player or another chess program. This program has been around for a long time:Version 1 was written by Stuart Cracraft in 1984 for a Unix systemVersions 2, 3 and 4 used John Stanback's Chess in their coreVersion 5 was written by Chua Kong-SianThe latest version at the time of writing (2014), is version 6.1.2 and this was developed from a chess program called Fruit developed by Fabien Letouzey. This has a new chess engine but is backward compatible with previous versionsGNU Chess version 2.31 was ported to Windows 3.x in 1991 and to WIN 95 in 1995. Versions of GNU Chess series v4 and series v5 were also ported to Windows but version 6 series does not appear, in 2014, to have a port to Windows. The version 2.31 ports have a full graphical interface with the kind of options you would expect from a chess program, there is a hint function, file upload functions, the ability to change board colors, pieces and text, the board can be configured to play a set problem, etc.
