Not much is known about the life of Manuel 'Manny' Calavera. However, it is known what happened to him after he died. The Land of the Dead is the place where all people are reincarnated after death, becoming skeletal figures. The Land of the Dead is also very similar to the world of the living: people work, have careers, fall in love, and can even die again, becoming flowers. And everyone awaits their final destination: a journey to the underworld. Depending on their deeds in life, they may get a good trip or be destined to walk there without means.
Manny works at a travel agency that handles these trips. But lately, something is wrong. Manny is not getting good clients and suspects there is a plot to falsify the records of the dead, offering the best trips to scoundrels in exchange for bribes. Manny's great adventure begins when he enters the world of corruption and intrigue.
Grim Fandango is a puzzle-solving adventure game depicting several years of Manny Calavera's later life. Influenced by Mexican mythology, film noir and Art Deco, the game combines 3D characters with pre-rendered backgrounds. Traditional mouse interaction is abandoned in favor of keyboard control for movements and actions. Manny is operated with the keyboard arrows, and tilts his head whenever something attracts his interest; the object or character in question can then be examined or interacted with.
As usual in LucasArts adventure games, the conversations offer a multitude of different responses for the player to choose from. Despite the lack of the option to combine objects together within the inventory, the game still contains many challenging puzzles that require the manipulation of inventory and environmental elements.
