Description Hopeless
Hopeless is a side-scrolling game with platforming elements in which the screen moves as you move your hero, Al 'Dutch Meat' Bluntz, as you attempt to rescue your girl, Jane, from the clutches of the most wanted person in the Galaxy, the Manic Munk. The Munk has taken her to his lair in the heart of the Solar System, Milton Keynes, and after 'borrowing' the latest space shuttle, you have arrived at the lair ready to attempt her rescue. The only way to get Jane is to destroy the Munk, but the Munk is protected by fourteen gates that guard the nerve center of the lair and are controlled by hearts. To deactivate the doors, you have to turn off the hearts by means of several terminals scattered around the immense lair one by one. Once the nerve center is open to enter, you can take on the Manic Munk, get Jane and live happily ever after.
As you walk the platforms and use the ladders to explore the lair, you also have a Jet-Pack that allows you to fly around the lair and open space, but there are also doors blocking the routes, so you also have to find terminals to activate and deactivate them. Using the Jet-Pack consumes fuel which is shown on a meter that decreases when in use. Many creatures move around the lair and you have to avoid or destroy them because if you touch one you lose part of your strength and energy meters and if these reach zero it's game over. You are armed with a defense shield or a laser, but these consume energy or fuel, but you can also use a karate chop which doesn't diminish anything. Icons show which weapon you are using and there are also icons showing the game status.
Below the game area with your icons and gauges, you also have a compass that shows the direction in which the joystick is being used and four dots, one of which turns blue, that show you the direction of the nearest heart terminal. Other terminals can be found that can increase your energy, strength and fuel meters, as well as display a map showing a small part of the lair that can be scrolled to look around. You can also transport to other parts of the lair.
