Hovertank One

Hovertank One is a video game in the action genre developed by id Software, Inc. and published by Softdisk Publishing originally released in 1991. It is currently playable on DOS.

HoverTank is a fun two-player split-screen tank battle game, like Atari's classic Combat, but with better graphics and more power-ups. You start at a random or predetermined location, depending on the map you are on, and then you must hunt down the enemy tank, which can be controlled by humans or the computer.

Apart from improved graphics and sounds compared to the Atari original, HoverTank introduces some new features. For example, you can take advantage of the gray and red mines scattered around the map. An effective strategy is to throw the enemy tank into a mine to kill the life force. You can also use the WARP function to move to another part of the screen, but you only have a limited number of WARPs to use, so use sparingly.

One of the things I like most about HoverTank is the cool physics model. Your tank moves more like Finnish cavefliers' ships (e. g. V-Wing) than a tank game: that is, inertia is taken into account. If you're going very fast, don't expect to be able to make sharp 90-degree turns or stop abruptly. You can also bounce off certain surfaces and lose life force if you're not careful enough. Needless to say, the game is more fun if you play against a friend on the same computer, but the computer 'drones' also put up a good fight.

If you like the Atari classic, HoverTank is one of the best fan-made clones you'll come across.
