Hyper 3-D Pinball

Hyper 3-D Pinball is a video game in the action genre developed by NMS Software Ltd. and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment (Europe) Ltd. originally released in 1995. It is currently playable on DOS.

Hyper 3-D Pinball is a fun pinball game with 6 well-designed tables, each with its own theme. Marketed as Tilt! in Europe, the game features nicely rendered graphics with ball-locking video animations and multiple views.

You can play from the typical 2D top-down scrolling view, 3D scrolling view, or 3D non-scrolling full-screen view. Most of these modes also support multiple resolutions, offering a much wider range of viewing options than other pinball games. Multiple views aside, how does Peoria play? The result is mixed. The 2D view is almost unplayable due to slow scrolling and slow ball movement. However, the 3D modes more than make up for it: both are fluidly animated, with plenty of detailed targets and crisp graphics. However, don't expect the ball physics to be accurate: the ball accelerates too fast, the ramp behaves strangely, and the flippers are not very responsive.

Although all 6 tables have similar objectives, they offer interesting mission-based challenges (i. e. combos that you have to perform in the right order). Pinball fan site Tower of Pin tells us about the shortcomings of the game's physics engine: 'Although it was the best looking PCPin game graphically at the time, the physics were horrible. Most of the problems were the ramps that practically sucked the ball up if you hit it near them and the inlanes that accelerated the ball too much, which made aiming difficult and killed the 'feel' of real pinball for many. Still, the game not only looked good, but had SIX fairly complex tables, with wizard' game modes.

So, if you like graphically excellent pinball games and don't care about realistic physics, you'll probably like Tilt! However, if you are a diehard pinball fan, this game is not worth your time.
