Iga Ninden: Gaō

Iga Ninden: Gaō is a video game in the action genre developed by Cream and published by Nihon Bussan Co., Ltd. originally released in 1993. It is currently playable on TurboGrafx CD.

During the Edo period in Japan, the ninja clans of Iga and Kōga fought each other. A mysterious foreigner named Doppelgen Hauser, aided by Kōga ninja, kidnapped Princess Mayura. An Iga ninja named Hattori Gaō vowed to catch up with the criminal and rescue the princess, but the ninja of the Kōga clan will do everything in their power to stop him.

Iga Ninden Gaō is a side-scrolling action game very loosely based on historical events, with plenty of anachronisms and supernatural elements. Gaō primarily uses his sword to defeat enemies; he can also jump and attack in the air. Sometimes it is necessary to jump over bottomless pits or other obstacles to advance. Pressing the attack button will charge a special meter that allows Gaō to throw knives at enemies. In addition, Gaō possesses powerful special attacks throughout the screen that come in limited quantities. Enemies can drop charges for such attacks, health-restoring items, and other power-ups. Stages usually culminate in boss battles, after which the hero gains access to new weapons and armor.
