Insects in Space

Insects in Space is a video game in the action genre developed by Sensible Software and published by Hewson Consultants Ltd. originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST.

Insects in Space is a side-scrolling shooter with similarities to Defender. Insects have killed all but a few babies on Earth. This prompts the mystical motherhood leader, Saint Elena, to travel to the remains of Earth and save the babies. The most important feature of this protagonist is the fact that she is topless and - as prominently mentioned in the manual - 'with big breasts', but is controlled and shot just like the spaceship normally found in such games.

The levels are side-scrolling and Santa Elena can move in both directions. In addition, the levels have two screens, the lower one with a floor and the upper one with a ceiling, which can be switched by leaving the current screen to either the upper or lower screen. Babies are placed on the upper or lower level and are hunted by bees. These bees pick them up, steal their life energy to create a new monster and drop them on the ground to die. The player's job is to kill the bees and save the babies. To help, a radar shows where in the level an abduction is taking place. The babies can be returned to the ground for points or kept within Helen's reach to turn them into power-ups over time. Helen can also summon a dust cloud that teleports her near a bee target.
