Inwazja

Inwazja is a video game in the action genre developed by ArStudio and published by ArSoft Corporation originally released in 1988. It is currently playable on Atari 8-bit.

One of the more underappreciated classic video games of the 1980s was Inwazja, released in 1988 as a rare title for the Atari 8-bit computer in Europe. The game was first published by Digivision in Poland, though International Software Designs (ISD) re-released it in both the UK and America, where unfortunately it didn’t experience the same level of success.

In the game, players assume the role of a galactic freedom fighter bent on saving the universe from the dystopian forces of the Co-Ruler of the World. Using a highly advanced spaceship, the player must pilot through the Co-Ruler’s forces and the hazardous terrain of the galaxies in an effort to neutralize various defense satellites and bunkers.

The gameplay involves both the usual spaceship shooting as well as thorough navigation of treacherous extraterrestrial obstacles. With 27 possible stages, spanning across 12 different galaxies, there are various degrees of difficulty that players can navigate depending on their capabilities. With every destroyed object or enemy ship, players are rewarded with points, and at the end of the stage, the higher scoring players will progress.

Graphically the game is well-presented. It has a fair amount of detail when compared to contemporaries, and with impressive animation, it creates a suitably realistic landscape of alien terrain. The sound effects are also top-notch; the electronic bleeps and bloops accompany the fighting and explosions splendidly, making it an immersive experience for players.

This title proved to be both critically acclaimed and commercially successful in Central Europe, yet it wasn’t the same in the UK and America. Thankfully, Inwazja still exists as an emulation with many versions available for Mac and PC, so it can be enjoyed as it was intended. All in all, it’s a great title for any 8-bit enthusiast, and fans of classic shoot-em-up games should definitely check it out.
