The planet Spiraeus is infected by an unknown virus and the core of life is dying. To save the planet, a lone hero, a metal-organic hybrid creature with the nickname 'Jug', must reach the depths of the planet and confront its infesting enemies.
Jug is a non-linear side-view shooter that scrolls in all directions. The player's goal is to reach the exit of each level while dodging labyrinthine structures and respawning enemies. The Jag transforms into a variety of ships and has three firing modes available: standard weapon, laser and smart bomb. The Jag can hover in the air, but this consumes fuel, which can be replenished by staying on the ground. Some of the levels must be unlocked by collecting special items that remove barriers. Other power-up items improve the shooting mode of Jug, add smart bombs, and replenish fuel and shields.
The game has a two-player mode, but each player must complete their own levels independently of the other's progress.
