In Kenseiden, you play as Hayato, a fearless samurai warrior. You must recover the stolen swords and scrolls and defeat the evil that awaits you in the Black Castle.
Kenseiden is a single player game consisting of sixteen levels. Each of the levels is side-scrolling, with bamboo houses or dark haunted caves as a backdrop. In these levels, Hayato is besieged by ghosts, skeletons and other supernatural spirits. At his side is his curved sword, which he can wield at will against the monsters. If Hayato comes into contact with a monster, he will lose some life.
At the end of each level, you will have to fight a sorcerer or one of his minions. Most of the time, there is a hut with a sealed door, but the door won't unlock unless you defeat a warlock or minion. You get a new special power each time you retrieve a scroll from them. These special powers range from high jumping to the ability to spin your sword like a windmill.
