Kick Off 96 is a video game in the sports genre developed by Anco Software Ltd. and published by Funsoft GmbH originally released in 1996. It is currently playable on DOS, Amiga.
Released in 1996, Kick Off 96 stands as an arrival of ingenuity and intense gaming to the DOS platform. Amongst its peers, this game was able to create a big stir with its amazing features and eye-catching graphics. While there had been a few soccer based games before it, this one, more than others, captured the quintessential spirit and mechanics of the classic game of football. A set of improvements from the previous versions of Kick Off made this new release all the more enjoyable and captivating for many.
One of the first noticeable changes was the new 3D graphics engine, which allowed the players to view the match from multiple camera angles. The visual representation of the game was also greatly enhanced. New terrains and weather effects were programmed, making the environment even more realistic and close to the real thing. The music and sound effects were also on point, classic theme songs complimenting the thrilling nature of each match. Furthermore, computer controlled players were enhanced with improved Artificial Intelligence, responding more efficiently to players' moves. A multiplayer option was also added, giving players the chance to compete against each other both on the same machine or online.
With this improved version, the detailed game mechanics and options seemed endless. Player managers could now select different formation strategies, select player positions and determine which players take penalty shots. It was also the first game to introduce Use Offs which allowed the players to control the goalkeeper and purposefully throw the ball away from the goal.
While the game was designed for DOS, the hardware requirements were quite minimal, adding to its popularity. Kick Off 96 boasts an excellent level of playability for a game of its time. Its enticing game features, attention to detail, and imposing graphics meant that it quickly became a core part of many DOS gamers' collections. Granted, Kick Off96 is now a relic, but with its fun-filled mechanics and robust features, it is still worth dusting off and playing to this day.
