Knight Exchange

Knight Exchange is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Softdisk Publishing and published by Softdisk Publishing originally released in 1988. It is currently playable on DOS.

Knight Exchange is a fun and rather unique board game, based on concepts similar to chess. In this game, the board is a four by four grid. Twelve markers are placed, each representing a chess knight, with six white markers placed at the bottom right of the grid and six black markers placed at the top left of the grid. The object of the game is to make the white markers swap with the black markers in as few moves as possible, with each piece moving as a knight moves in chess.

Here is an explanation of the game: as in chess, each piece can move two spaces forward and one space sideways ('forward' and 'sideways' mean any direction except a diagonal). To move, type the letter of the square you are moving from and the letter of the square you are moving to. For example, to move from 'P' to 'G', press first the key P and then G. Don't worry, the program will not allow you to make an illegal or invalid move.

If you get stuck with no possible moves (it can happen!) or just want to take back a move (or moves), press BACK. You can use this function as many times as you want, but it will cost you one point each time you do it. Enter 'S' to turn the sound on or off, and type ESC to exit (you will then have the opportunity to restart the game).

Oh yes, a word about strategy. Like chess, mastering the game requires the ability and concentration to plan moves in advance. Unfortunately, the authors are lousy chess players and this fact was painfully evident in our playtesting. Our best (lowest) score was thirty-two. We don't know what the lowest possible score is, but surely you can improve our effort. Good luck (NOTE: The lowest score obtained by BIG BLUE DISK staff members during testing was sixteen)'.

Overall, if you like brain teasers and board games in general, Knight Exchange is worth a look. The game isn't very complex or replayable, but it's a nice coffee time diversion that you'll enjoy while it lasts.
