Last Action Hero

Last Action Hero is a video game in the action genre developed by Bits Studios Ltd. and published by Sony Imagesoft originally released in 1993. It is currently playable on Genesis.

The 16-bit console version of the licensed movie Last Action Hero combines side-scrolling beat'em up levels with driving sequences.

Players control action hero Jack Slater through four beat'em up levels. The first two are inspired by the opening sequence of the movie (the ending of 'Jack Slater III'), the third by the hotel funeral within the movie world, and the last by the opening of 'Jack Slater IV' in the real world. Slater must make it to the exit of the level before the timer or his energy runs out. Several thugs stand in his way and must be defeated by kicking or punching. There are four varieties of enemies in the game, wielding knives, baseball bats, Molotov cocktails or guns. Spent life energy can be replenished by collecting movie tickets that sometimes fall from the sky. The Genesis version adds an extra twist in the first level: a crosshair will follow Slater and fire random bullets at him. All levels, except the first, end with a boss fight. Bosses include The Ripper, a helicopter and the main villain, Benedict.

The driving sequences are also seen from the side. Slater's car must avoid crashing into cars and trucks parked on the road as he attempts to destroy enemy cars by jumping over a ramp and then landing on them.

Scenes tell the story of the movie between levels, following the original plot only vaguely.
