Last Defender

Last Defender is a video game in the action genre developed by Migami and published by Migami originally released in 2004. It is currently playable on Windows.

Last Defender is a great horizontal shooter by Miguel 'MIG2' Perez, an amateur designer best known for the Lost Valley RPG.

The game features outstanding graphics, addictive and frenetic shooting action, and well-designed levels and enemy ships. Although it would already be a great game if the list of features stopped there, but MIG2 went beyond most shooters by adding a lot of nice extras. For example, you can 'unlock' certain special options after finishing the game - you'll see different options for different difficulty levels (there are four in total).

One of the coolest features that more shooters should use is the ability to steal weapons from enemy ships to use on your own. In addition to the 4 standard weapons, this effectively gives you over 20 weapons to choose from. Like other games by the same author, Last Defender is difficult, very difficult. But the good graphics and great parallax scrolling action will keep you glued to the screen no matter how many times you have to restart. It would have been nice to have more sound effects, as well as more time to test the game (I found one or two glitches: sometimes stolen weapons don't work), but as it stands Last Defender is already a fun and very challenging shooter.

More than most free releases, it really makes you feel like you're back to playing fun 8-bit shooters on Nintendo's console.
