Laydock is a video game in the action genre developed by T&E Soft, Inc. and published by T&E Soft, Inc. originally released in 1985. It is currently playable on MSX, FM-7.
In the mid-1980s, the MSX gaming system was in its prime, producing a multitude of unforgettable titles. One such game that remains a cult classic to this day is "Laydock," released in 1985 by T&E Soft. A futuristic action game that combined elements of both space shooting and side-scrolling platforming, Laydock was truly ahead of its time in terms of gameplay and graphics.
The game is set in the year 2527, where an alien race known as the "Negativus" has attacked Earth. The player assumes the role of a skilled pilot, Cero, who must navigate through six different stages to defeat the Negativus and save his planet. The gameplay is split between two modes: space shooting and side-scrolling platforming. In the space shooting segments, players control a spaceship and must defeat hordes of enemy ships while avoiding obstacles and collecting power-ups. The side-scrolling segments, on the other hand, require the player to navigate Cero through various platforms and obstacles while battling ground enemies.
What makes Laydock stand out from other games of its time is its unique graphics and animation. The game utilized a special chip called the "VDP2" that allowed for smooth scrolling and detailed background graphics. The spaceship and character animations were also fluid and visually impressive. The game's soundtrack, composed by Masahiko Hataya, was a perfect match for the intense gameplay, creating an immersive experience for players.
Furthermore, Laydock featured a unique power-up system, where players could choose from different ship parts and weapons to customize their gameplay. These power-ups could also be obtained by destroying certain enemy ships or found hidden within the levels. This added an element of strategy to the game, allowing players to tailor their gameplay according to their style. Additionally, each of the six stages had its own boss, possessing unique attack patterns and weaknesses, providing a challenging and dynamic experience for players.
Despite being released over three decades ago, Laydock still holds up as an enjoyable and engaging game. Its mixture of space shooting and side-scrolling gameplay, paired with its stunning graphics and soundtrack, make it a timeless classic. The game was also praised for its difficulty level, which provided a satisfying sense of accomplishment for players who managed to beat it. Despite receiving two sequels, Laydock remains a fan favorite among MSX enthusiasts, with many deeming it as one of the best MSX games of all time.
