Light Flipper is a puzzle-like platform game in which the player takes control of the titular character, a small green creature. The game consists of single-screen levels and the objective in each is to collect all the keys so that an exit opens. Each level has a river at the bottom where the player enters a raft from the right and the exit is on the left side.
The player character can climb the walls and will do so automatically when using the jump button to move vertically. Creatures roam the levels and must be avoided or the player will lose a life. It is also necessary to avoid falling rocks and jumping into water. Oxygen is limited and will run out unless the player collects oxygen tanks to replenish it. To kill enemies, flash lights must be collected. After being activated they function similarly to the power pills in Pac-Man and allow the player to go after enemies for a brief moment. In addition, there are pots that can be collected for bonus points.
