Lost in Space: Dr. Smith Goes Home places the player in the role of Dr. Zachary Smith, stranded with the Robinson family after the Jupiter 2 is forced down on an unknown world. Smith’s immediate objective is to locate a way back to the damaged spacecraft, recover the equipment needed for departure, and survive the hazards scattered across the planet. The adventure follows the familiar television characters, including Professor John Robinson, Maureen Robinson, Judy, Penny, Will, and the ever-helpful Robot, while presenting an original journey through alien terrain and abandoned installations.
The game combines exploration, problem solving, and light arcade action. Each area must be searched for tools, components, access cards, and other useful objects before progress can be made. Items may be examined, collected, combined, or used with scenery, machinery, and characters. Conversations provide clues concerning locked doors, missing equipment, and the planet’s unusual defenses, although Dr. Smith’s self-serving manner often makes cooperation difficult. Correctly interpreting a clue is essential, since many obstacles cannot be overcome by strength or speed alone. A limited supply of equipment encourages careful use and rewards players who thoroughly investigate each location.
The planet is divided into connected screens representing rocky valleys, cavern passages, wreckage fields, research chambers, and sections of the Jupiter 2. Moving between these locations reveals switches, concealed passages, hostile creatures, and environmental dangers. Some sequences require the player to guide Smith past patrols or across hazardous ground, while others call for quick reactions as machinery activates or creatures close in. The Robot serves as an important companion during several portions of the journey, assisting with obstacles that Smith cannot handle himself. Failure usually returns the player to an earlier point, making observation and planning more valuable than reckless movement.
Graphics are presented in a colorful DOS display with boldly outlined characters and compact, detailed backgrounds. Smith and the Robinson family are recognizable through their costumes and exaggerated expressions, while the alien world uses dark caverns, metallic corridors, and sharply contrasting planetary skies to create variety. Animated doors, consoles, machinery, and creatures give each screen a sense of activity. Cut-scenes and character exchanges provide the story with a comic tone, particularly when Smith attempts to claim credit for the group’s discoveries or escape without assistance.
A programmed soundtrack supplies brief electronic melodies during exploration, with sharper effects marking alarms, machinery, weapon fire, and encounters with alien life. Sound is used sparingly but effectively, emphasizing important events without distracting from the puzzles. The result is an approachable science-fiction adventure that combines the Robinson family’s survival mission with Dr. Smith’s constant schemes, offering a mixture of exploration, object-based puzzles, conversation, and danger across a compact extraterrestrial world.
