Madden NFL 97

Madden NFL 97 is a video game in the sports genre developed by Electronic Arts, Inc. and published by Electronic Arts, Inc. originally released in 1996. It is currently playable on Genesis.

Now that the PC and 32-bit console versions have entered the realm of true 3D graphics, Madden NFL 97 on Genesis maintains the classic vision of the series, updating it with different features and options compared to the SNES version.

The game includes all 30 regular NFL teams from the 1996 season, the 1996 All-Madden team and 68 classic NFL teams, from the '52 Lions to the '95 Cowboys.

Standard game modes include exhibition, full season and playoffs, including the Super Bowl. In seasons and playoffs, any game can be played or simulated (with the exception of the Super Bowl, which must be played). Special modes are Custom League and Custom Tournament. A custom league can be set up between 4 and 10 players with free choice teams. Each team plays against all other teams once at home and once away. Starting with 8 players, teams are divided into two divisions. The champions of the divisions face each other in a final playoff. The custom tournament can be configured for 4, 8 and 16 players to compete for the Madden Bowl in single elimination mode.

The length of quarters can be set between 5 and 15 minutes. Weather conditions can be set between fair, rain and snow. Other options include two skill levels (Pro and Madden), John Madden's commentary, freely definable audibles, eight different penalties that can be set at different levels, player fatigue, injuries and substitutions. Play calling mode can be set as a bluff, offense and pass catching can be set as manual or automatic, and all-player mode allows you to monitor any player in the offense, even those not directly involved in the play. Player records and season playoff progress are saved through the battery. Records are saved for each individual player, with eight slots available.

The game also features customizable rosters through player creation (stats are set through a set of numbers), trading and signing free agents.

In addition to custom leagues and tournaments, there is multiplayer support through 4-way play, which allows for any combination of team or versus play. One player always runs the plays and controls the quarterback, while the others can select which player to control.
