Magic: The Gathering Online

Magic: The Gathering Online is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Leaping Lizard Software, Inc. and published by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. originally released in 2002. It is currently playable on Windows.

Magic: The Gathering Online, also known as MTGO or just Magic Online, is a direct video game adaptation of the popular collectible card game Magic: The Gathering, utilizing the concept of a virtual economy in order to preserve the collectible aspect of the card game. It was released in June of 2002 by Wizards of the Coast. The game exists solely online and features complex rules and gameplay that mirrors the physical game.

Players can purchase virtual booster packs and pre-constructed decks, or construct their own decks from a limited pool of cards. They can then play against other players in a variety of formats, either in casual "quick matches" or in more competitive ranked games. Magic Online also features daily events called "Leagues", which allow players to compete for prizes over the course of several weeks.

Since its inception, Magic Online has undergone a number of major changes and updates. Perhaps the most significant change came in 2010, when the game switched to a free-to-play model with optional microtransactions. This change was made in order to make the game more accessible to new players, and has been largely successful.

Magic Online has been generally well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community. It is seen as a good way to play the game without having to invest in physical cards, and also provides a more competitive environment than casual kitchen table games. However, the game has been criticized for its high barrier to entry and its complex user interface. Overall, though, Magic Online remains a popular way to play the game for both casual and competitive players alike.
