Mars is a video game in the action genre developed by Engine Technology Co., Ltd. and published by Engine Technology Co., Ltd. originally released in 1997. It is currently playable on DOS.
In 1997, the DOS game Mars was made available to eager PC players. This first-person shooter game saw the player assume the role of a Martian soldier and take part in a conflict between two different Martain factions. Battling alone and in teams, players got to take control of humongous 12 foot tall mechs called Tri-Hawks to participate in a series of missions.
Although Mars' graphics and cut scenes were not as dynamic as other games present at the time, the excitement of the game lay in its intense combat. Players were given a variety of options to wage war such as a massive variety of weapons and mechs with different characteristics. Each mission was full of thrills with the sound of roar of rockets flying, bullets shooting, and battle damage being done.
The storyline of Mars is based on the nuclear war between the Freedom and Imperial armies at some point in the future. Players had the choice to choose and fight for either faction to help them win the war. As the game progresses, players move up the ranks in each faction's army, experiencing various battles between one faction and another. Better rank would offer bonuses and more powerful weapons, and ultimately the goal was to become the ultimate leader of the chosen faction.
An array of graphical options were available to make sure game play could suit a variety of skills and needs. Mars had difficulty levels that could be adjusted to fit a player’s experience, as well as a random mission selection which allowed for greater playability. Players were even allowed to completely customize their weaponary to fit whatever strategy they chose to use.
Though the game is no longer new, players fondly recall Mars for its gripping story lines, tougher-than-usual missions, and mainly for giving gamers the ability to choose their own sides and customize their playing experiences with various options. The game definitely left a lasting impression on gamers of the DOS era, becoming a well-known classic.
