Masyu

Masyu is a video game in the puzzle genre and published by Greenstreet Software Ltd. originally released in 2006. It is currently playable on Windows.

Masyu is a logic-puzzle game for Windows based on the traditional Japanese loop-drawing puzzle. Each puzzle presents a rectangular grid containing white and black pearls, with the remaining squares left empty. The object is to draw one continuous, unbroken loop through the grid, connecting the marked cells while obeying the rules associated with each pearl. Lines may run horizontally or vertically between neighboring squares, but they may not cross, branch, or terminate before the loop is complete.

The two kinds of pearls provide the essential clues. A black pearl must be included in the loop as a corner, requiring the line to turn through ninety degrees at that square. The line must continue straight through the squares immediately before and after the corner, preventing an adjacent turn. A white pearl must be crossed by a straight section of line, while the loop must turn in at least one of the neighboring squares on either side. These conditions allow a single mark to influence several surrounding spaces, and a correct deduction often comes from studying the empty squares around a pearl as carefully as the pearl itself.

Play takes place on a clean, uncluttered grid designed for close examination. The Windows interface keeps attention on the puzzle, using sharply defined cells, dark linework, and contrasting pearl symbols to make the state of the board easy to read. A selected square or line position is clearly indicated, while the developing loop remains visible across the entire board. The restrained presentation suits the deliberate nature of the game, and the gradual transformation of a sparse collection of clues into an intricate circuit gives each puzzle a distinct visual character.

Masyu is controlled with the mouse and is accessible from the first puzzle, although later boards demand increasingly careful planning. Players can extend the loop one segment at a time, test deductions around crowded groups of pearls, and retrace incorrect decisions when a contradiction appears. Empty regions are especially important: a line cannot create a closed loop before all required clues have been connected, and the completed route must form one loop rather than several smaller circuits. Progress depends on logical elimination rather than speed, with every placement contributing to the final shape.

Audio remains subordinate to the puzzle itself. Simple interface effects acknowledge selections and changes without distracting from the grid, while the quiet presentation encourages concentration during longer solving sessions. A completed board provides a clear sense of resolution as the final line joins the circuit and all pearl conditions are satisfied. Masyu offers a compact but demanding Windows puzzle experience, rewarding patience, visual awareness, and the ability to follow a chain of consequences from one marked square to the next.
