Midi-Maze is a video game in the action genre developed by Xanth Software F/X, Inc. and published by Hybrid Arts, Inc. originally released in 1987. It is currently playable on Atari ST.
Midi-Maze was a computer game released in 1987 for the Atari ST series of home computers. It was an arcade-style maze game and contained a brutal learning curve for players that wanted to excel at the game.
The maze game could be configured having up to sixteen players playing in a local-area network where they could battle against one another, noting that even during the era of stand-alone computer games, Midi-Maze was the first to feature multiple players. Each player was represented with a small blob and the goal was that the player with the most kills amongst the other players would emerge victorious.
The levels changed constantly as the game progressed; these included basic mazes to concentrations that involved the use of shields to protect from an enemy attack. There was also a few levels that contained locked doors and it was up to the players to pick up the keys to open the doors and progress to the next level. In order to remain competitive, players had to complete challenging levels and gather a sufficient number of points in order to progress to the game's end.
The challenging experience of this game preceded its success in the gaming market, and today it is regarded as a relic of the past and as a nostalgic trip down memory lane for more veteran players. Although the graphics and sound of the Midi-Maze have become an example of mediocrity in light of games released nowadays, the game succeeded in introducing the new concept of multiplayer gaming to Atari ST owners.
Although dated, Midi-Maze remains a true classic of the 4-bit era and is a must for anyone who is a fan of classic arcade games. It brought to the table a unique experience that was never seen before in the realm of Atari gaming.
