Military Coup

Military Coup is a video game in the strategy genre and published by Addison-Wesley Software originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on Commodore 64.

Military Coup is a single player strategy game in which you try to take control of a city from the current Government led by President Xerxes, trying to take over the most important streets and buildings. There are five skill levels to choose from, as well as the type of Government you want to take over and the type you will be if you succeed, and they are Communist, Socialist, Liberal, Right and Fascist. After your choices, you are shown a list of the 15 most important buildings which include a radio station, an airport, a hospital and a cathedral. The President's Palace is also included, but the chances of getting hold of it are very slim. The list of buildings also shows which side they would support and the probability of switching sides, which changes with each game.

You now see a map of the city displayed across the screen in the form of squares in an 11 x 7 grid with each square representing a street and the buildings in neutral gray. You now have four moves to take over a street or building and you can get an intelligence report on a building for free. If you succeed in the takeover, the building or street becomes your color, either red or blue, but if you fail, you lose all your remaining turns. Once your turn is over, the computer tries to take over, and when it has finished you are shown the news and other buildings or streets may change color or switch sides after both turns are completed. You continue to select buildings and lanes and can select the ones the computer owns. Points are awarded for certain successful moves and the winner of the game is the first to reach 35 points.
