Description Minder

In the mid-1980s, the MSX game market was flourishing, with new titles being released left and right. In the midst of all this success, a game called Minder was released in 1985, captivating audiences with its unique gameplay and challenging levels. Developed by the Japanese company Nippon Columbia, Minder became an instant hit and remains a beloved classic among MSX enthusiasts to this day.

Minder is a scrolling platform game that follows the adventures of a character named Marvin, whose goal is to collect coins and treasures scattered throughout various levels while evading obstacles and enemies. The game features a total of eight levels, each with its own distinct theme and layout, making for a diverse and engaging gameplay experience. The graphics, while simple by today's standards, were quite impressive for its time and added to the overall appeal of the game.

What sets Minder apart from other platform games of its time is its unique mechanic of having two levels to play simultaneously. The upper level is where Marvin moves and collects treasures, while the lower level is where the enemies reside. This adds an extra layer of challenge and strategy to the game, as players must manage two levels at once and carefully plan their movements to avoid enemies while still collecting treasures.

Another standout feature of Minder is its soundtrack, composed by the renowned Japanese musician Yuzo Koshiro. The game's music is a perfect fit for the action-packed gameplay, with its energetic and catchy tunes that will have players tapping their feet while controlling Marvin through the levels. The sound effects, while minimal, are also well-executed, adding to the overall immersive experience of the game.

One unique aspect of Minder is its titular character, who is not your typical hero but rather a quirky and lovable alien. Marvin's design and his ability to transform into a ball to evade enemies further add to the game's charm and make it stand out among other platform games of its time. The game also features some comic book-style cutscenes that add an extra layer of storytelling and give more depth to the character of Marvin.

Despite its initial success, Minder was not without its flaws. Some players found the game to be too challenging, with the levels becoming increasingly difficult as the game progressed. However, this added to its replay value and only made it more rewarding for those who managed to complete it. It also lacked a save feature, meaning players had to start from the beginning each time they wanted to play, which may have been a hindrance for some.
