Nebs is an Atari 8-bit video game released in 1983. The object of the game is for the player to move their character using the joystick, or the keyboard, around and attempt to collect Nebs scattered throughout the hostile landscape. Each neb must be navigated to the Flag at the end of the level.
The goal for the player is to complete the levels by collecting all the Nebs in as few moves as possible. This is a challenging task as the player has to avoid the enemies that hinder progress, like ships, ghosts, and dragons. These enemies will either shoot at or trap the player. If the player is hit by an enemy, they must start the game over.
To add to the peril, the game has two progressively harder difficulty levels. The alien world is composed of maze-like scrolling screens. It also contains all sorts of odd objects that can help or harm the player, such as lights and hidden doors. These objects become useable when the player comes in contact with them.
The overall design of the game is simplistic but effective. The graphics are well detailed and occasionally show off an amusing joke. The sound effects are also well done and really give you a sense of urgency when you’re being chased. The difficulty level is also fairly high, which makes it an enjoyable and challenging game.
Nebs is truly an Atari 8-bit classic that deserves to be remembered. It is a fun and demanding game that provides hours of entertainment. Players will be delighted by its bold visuals, tricky enemies, and perfectly timed arcade action. Nebs is an entertaining game that will leave players saying ‘just one more try'.
