NFL

NFL is a video game in the sports genre developed by Distinctive Software, Inc. and published by Konami (America), Inc. originally released in 1992. It is currently playable on DOS.

A faithful translation of a fun arcade sports game (a rare event in itself) from Konami, NFL Football is a fun soccer game that offers a nice balance of training and action without taking itself too seriously.

As an official licensee of the NFL professional soccer leagues, you can choose from several well-known teams (e. g. , the Broncos or the 49ers) in the West, Central and East divisions, for a total of more than 30 teams. You can play a preseason game, practice or create a new league and take your team to the Super Bowl. Despite the game's arcade origins, there are more coaching options than in other arcade-oriented games of this type (e. g. , Data East's Monday Night Football), though fewer than full-fledged simulations of the sport.

One of the best features of the game is that it is played in real time: you only have 45 seconds, for example, to choose offensive and defensive game tactics. If you don't move, the referee will whistle 'delay of game' and you will suffer a 5-yard penalty. This emphasis on real time keeps up the pace of the game, and requires all decisions to be made quickly and decisively. The graphics, as you would expect from Konami, are top notch, and the 'icing on the cake' such as substitutions, replays and the draft are handled efficiently and simply.

With an average 'season' lasting only a few games, and a lack of in-depth management options, NFL Football is, at best, a fun arcade-oriented football game that doesn't pretend to be a serious simulator, perhaps due to its heritage as a coin-op game. However, it is a great introduction to the sport for beginners, or for anyone bored with games like Monday Night Football or longer soccer simulators. Recommended.
