Nibblemen is a video game in the action genre developed by Emerson Radio Corp. and published by Emerson Radio Corp. originally released in 1982. It is currently playable on Arcadia 2001.
Nibblemen places the player in control of a small, quick-moving character navigating a series of enclosed mazes. The object is to clear every section of food from the passages while avoiding the roaming creatures that patrol the corridors. Each screen presents a complete maze, and success depends on choosing routes carefully, keeping moving, and judging the position of the pursuing enemies before entering a narrow passage. When the final morsel has been collected, the maze is cleared and play advances to a more demanding arrangement.
The Nibbleman responds directly to the joystick, travelling through the maze in four directions. Movement is continuous once a direction has been selected, allowing the player to concentrate on turning at each junction and maintaining a safe distance from the opposition. The corridors are built with frequent corners, short lanes, and enclosed areas that make escape routes important. A careless turn can leave the player trapped between two enemies, while a well-timed change of direction can send the pursuers past and open a path toward the remaining food.
Several special objects add variety to the basic chase. Power items placed within the maze temporarily give the Nibbleman the advantage, changing the balance of the pursuit and allowing the enemies to be confronted rather than avoided. Their effect is limited, so the player must decide when to collect one and how best to use the brief opportunity. Enemy movement becomes increasingly difficult to predict as the screens progress, and the growing number of hazards demands faster reactions and a more complete understanding of the maze layout. Extra lives provide some protection, but careless play quickly reduces the reserve.
The display uses a simple, brightly coloured arcade style suited to the Arcadia 2001 screen. Solid maze walls define the playfield against a dark background, with food items arranged along the corridors and distinct sprites representing the Nibbleman and his pursuers. The compact characters remain clearly visible while moving through the tightly packed passages. Changes in colour and arrangement distinguish successive screens, giving each new maze its own appearance without sacrificing the immediate clarity required during a chase.
Sound effects provide the essential signals of play: movement and collection are marked by short electronic tones, while collisions and the loss of a life receive sharper warning sounds. The audio is spare but effective, reinforcing the rhythm of clearing a corridor, reaching a power item, and escaping a closing group of enemies. Nibblemen is easy to begin but increasingly demanding to master, rewarding quick hands, memorised routes, and the nerve to remain in the maze when danger is approaching from every direction.
