Description Nippon

Nippon is a German RPG with similarities to the Ultima games of the same era. After reading a magic scroll, the protagonist Toshiro finds himself teleported to a feudal Japan with some mild fantasy additions in the form of magic scrolls and monsters. The game focuses on exploring the world and solving some puzzles.

The journey takes place on a world map over which the player character is directly controlled. When the player finds a village, he can enter it, which causes the game to switch to a new screen. Here there are several NPCs to encounter and interact with. In addition to the usual merchants, with whom gold is exchanged for better equipment, the player can try to talk to peasants. This is only successful if the right tone of conversation is chosen, e. g. servile or intimidating. Other things that can be found on the world map are alternative methods of travel, e. g. teleports, or paths such as fire that can be traversed but harm the player.

When combat is initiated, the game locks the current screen. The player has to navigate the screen, position himself in front of an enemy and press a button to initiate an attack. A victory awards experience points that, over time, allow for improved stats: strength, agility and hit points. The player character needs to eat and sleep.
