Ocean Trader

Ocean Trader is a video game in the simulation genre developed by Software 2000 and published by Software 2000 originally released in 1995. It is currently playable on DOS.

Ocean Trader is an excellent and unobtrusive shipping simulator from the creators of Pizza Tycoon that is virtually unknown outside of Europe.

As the manager of a global shipping business, your responsibilities range from choosing the type of ships to buy to finding a profit-maximizing balance between speed and fuel costs. Your banker is willing to give you loans at exorbitant rates, and profit opportunities abound, thanks to the different prices of goods in different cities. The game's graphics are the static but pleasing SVGA, and the interface is excellent (the map screen, in particular, clearly shows the desired exports and imports for each country). Although Ocean Trader does not approach the level of realism of Capitalism Plus, it is a very nice 'light' business game that has a solid (if simple) economic model. In a nod to the real world of the shipping industry, you can also sign forward contracts (which set prices for delivery of an agreed quantity of goods) and take advantage of special shipping contracts as they appear. A great game overall, and a good alternative for those looking for a shipping simulator with more 'meat' than the more straightforward Ports of Call.
