Oink! was a delightful game released by Atari in 1983. It was one of the last titles to be released by the company before its dismal sales lead to the great Atari Crash of 1983. Despite the industry meltdown, Oink! is still beloved by many gamers who consider it to be an excellent example of a classic puzzle game.
The goal of the game is to assist the protagonist, a pig named Oinker, in gathering all of the eggs on a game board before time runs out. This proves to be a deceptively challenging feat, as there are various obstacles scattered throughout the level blocking passage. These hindrances require players to carefully plot their routes in order to best traverse the board before the timer strikes zero.
In addition to the main game, players can also opt to challenge a friend in the two-player cooperative mode. Here, players must work together to help Oinker collect all of the eggs within the allotted time. Fans of the cooperative mode will be pleased to know that the game also features five different levels, increasing the difficulty, as well as two entirely different game boards to choose from.
Aesthetically, Oink! is very dated compared to modern titles, however, audiences of the era will surely recognize the vibrant 8-bit visuals and catchy chiptune melodies. Though the near four-decade-old game has not aged well visually, the clever gameplay and creative level design still provides players with a genuinely fun and addictive experience.
Even with the long-gone industry giant Atari serving as its publisher, Oink! is still an enjoyable game in its own right that is sure to provide hours of challenging entertainment. It may be tough for newer players to get accustomed to, but veterans of the early eighties gaming era will love the nostalgia that comes with playing and remembering this charming little title.
