Othello

Othello is a video game in the strategy genre and published by Sony Corporation originally released in 1983. It is currently playable on SMC-777.

SMC-777 Othello presents the classic board game in a compact computer format, using an eight-by-eight grid as its entire field of play. Two opponents compete with black and white counters, placing one counter at a time on the vacant squares. The object is to occupy more spaces than the opposing color when the board is filled or no further legal move is available. The simple rules make the game immediately accessible, while the changing pattern of the board gives every move tactical importance.

A counter may be placed only when it encloses one or more opposing counters between the newly placed piece and another counter of the player’s own color in a straight horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. All enclosed counters are then turned over, changing their color and potentially opening new lines for subsequent moves. Several lines may be captured with a single placement. If no legal move exists, the turn passes to the opponent; when neither side can move, the counters are counted and the player with the larger total wins.

The SMC-777 version arranges the board and counters in a clear, uncluttered display suited to the computer’s text-and-graphics screen. The board is shown from directly above, with the dark and light pieces standing out against the contrasting grid. Cursor movement and key commands select the desired square, allowing play to proceed without complicated procedures. The display changes immediately after each move, showing newly placed counters and every piece reversed by the capture. The current position remains easy to read even as the board becomes crowded.

Play may be approached as a measured contest of calculation rather than a test of speed. Early placements determine the lines and corners available later, and a move that gains several counters can still leave a dangerous position if it gives the opponent access to an edge or corner. The computer opponent provides a practical challenge for solitary play, while the orderly board presentation also makes the game suitable for two players sharing the keyboard. Sound is limited to brief electronic confirmation tones and move signals, keeping attention on the board and the steady development of the position. Each game is quick to begin, yet the final result depends on planning, timing, and control of the few remaining spaces.
