Description OverDrive
OverDrive, the 1998 Windows game, is an inexpensive yet energizing racing experience. Players race eight distinct tracks and five distinct cars, all rendered in 3D. Placing in each race awards points, including bonus points for achieving first place.
The in-game physics are not incredibly realistic, but the results are occasionally surprising; it's not uncommon for cars to float in the air, or get stuck, making for a mix of usually unexpected obstacles. OverDrive also offers a variety of terrains, tracks, and different perspectives, providing an additional level of complexity.
The sound effects of the game won’t blow you away, but with the accompanying music, they capture the spirit of a wild race. In addition, the graphics are above-average for a game of its age, creating vivid, detailed environments suitable for a race. The cars themselves are also beautiful, and each of the five is unique.
The game includes both multiplayer mode and a single-player mode. To begin a multiplayer game, two to four players must be connected to the same Local Area Network (LAN). The single player mode is engaging, as well. Objectives, such as unlocking hidden cars and tracks, must be completed to obtain higher scores.
With fast-paced, speedy gameplay, OverDrive pushes players to be quicker and smarter in order to compete. Consequently, the game isn’t excessively challenging once the player learns the tracks, but it remains an entertaining option for an evening or two of gaming.
