A few hours before the Allied forces reached the beaches on D-Day (June 6, 1944), an element of the British 6th Airborne Division made a night landing using gliders and parachutes, initiating Operation Deadstick. Their task was to capture the Caen Canal and Orne River bridges, the only route eastward for the Allies from the 'Sword' beach.
