Phantasy Star II

Phantasy Star II is a video game in the role-playing (rpg) genre developed by SEGA Enterprises Ltd. and published by SEGA Enterprises Ltd. originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on Genesis.

A millennium has passed since Alis defeated the ultimate evil in the first Phantasy Star. The planet Motavia in the Algol solar system is no longer the ant-infested desert: humans have built a sentient computer called 'Mother Brain', which can regulate the planet's climate, turning it into a thriving utopia. One night, a young Motavian government agent named Rolf wakes up in his bed after having a nightmare. He sees a young woman fighting a demon, but is unable to help her. Soon after, he learns that dangerous biomonsters have been released from the laboratories, and he is sent there to retrieve a tape recorder that could contain valuable information about the terrible incident....

Like its predecessor, the game is a match-based Japanese RPG, with randomly appearing enemies and turn-based combat. Eight characters can join the quest and can be swapped out at will to participate in a combat party of four. Characters can equip a variety of weapons, including firearms; dual-wielding is also possible. Different characters learn various techniques that require 'TP' (technique points, equivalent to magic points in comparable games) at specific levels. Unlike the first game, Phantasy Star II uses the same top-down view for both navigation and dungeon exploration; the dungeons, now in 2D, are notable for their complexity.
