Planet: The New Frontier

Planet: The New Frontier is a video game in the strategy genre originally released in 2000. It is currently playable on Windows.

In 2076, 2,000 brave pioneers, full of hope and promise, set sail from Earth on the Mayflower II for Alpha Centauri to establish the galaxy's first human colony, a journey that was to last 47 years. But something went wrong.

Twenty-six hundred and sixty-three years later. The Mayflower had sailed for centuries through interstellar space in search of a planet to colonize.

It is a testament to Earth's technological prowess and craftsmanship that most of the systems aboard this spacecraft are still functional. Finally, the ship has found a suitable planet and is about to enter that planet's orbit, as designed, to prepare for colonization. Unfortunately, however, this is the one point where things are no longer quite right.

The Mayflower II has crashed into the planet and is accelerating without brakes. The Mayflower is equipped with an emergency landing capsule. The capsule contains the remains of 200 colonists and scientists who were cryogenically frozen before launch. In the event of an emergency, these 200 people will attempt to establish a human presence on the planet.

As mission commander, your job is to select a landing site and prepare for the orderly awakening and transfer of the colonists to the planet's surface. Mission planners anticipate a six-month to two-year analysis period from orbit, during which they can carefully weigh the pros and cons and select the best landing site for the colony.

Forget about a tidy awakening or taking the time to choose the right landing site. It takes less than two minutes for the ship to wake them up before they make their decision and fire the emergency escape pod.

Back on Earth, the trainer deals with the conditions necessary for a successful colony. Looking through the planetoscope, it appears that the planet has water near the equator. For the colony to survive, it needs to land where there is water.

It also needs resources to mine and refine the metals and materials needed to build the colony. However, it turns out that there are two types of soil on the planet. Hopefully one or the other will provide us with the resources we need to survive.
