Description Player of the Year
Based on the English FA and starring the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), this action management game by Krisalis is probably one of the most underrated soccer games ever.
Updated and improved version of Manchester United: The Double, Player of the Year has in common the interface, and the well-known Tacti-Grid tactical system, now in its version II. Now the gameplay. . you have two options for the season mode: Player and Manager. As a player, you must work your way up from Div. 3 or the conference to the Premier League, and become the 'Player of the Year'. You can put yourself in trade, and start controlling the team you sell yourself to. However, you don't improve over time, so unfortunately, if you buy a couple of good players for your position, you'll be out of the game in no time.
As a manager, you have exactly the same options, except that you don't have yourself as a team member. And you can't change teams either. The 'arcade' part of the game is almost brilliant, with the fans all dressed in the color of the home teams, with only the top part featuring the away fans, the gameplay, while becoming easy at first, manages to combine simplicity and imperfection without making the game feel terribly shallow. There are 4 player models in total (from blond to black - so no Abel Xavier look for anyone), the jerseys are perfectly recognizable (and each team has up to three kits), you can configure the weather, the strictness of the referee and all the usual things you find in similar games.
Basically, POTY is another game that seems to be completely untested, and at best, an incomplete beta of a product that promised much more, but has failed, and due to too many bugs and the ease of playing when you get a couple of talented players. Not a priority unless you want to try every soccer game ever made.
