Polanie

Polanie is a video game in the strategy genre developed by MDF and published by TopWare CD-Service AG originally released in 1996. It is currently playable on DOS.

The year is 699. The young Slavic prince Mirko returns from a successful war raid to find that his settlement has been burned down and all his relatives killed. Vowing revenge on the treacherous neighbors, Mirko gathers his faithful warriors and leads them to conquer all the surrounding territories.

Polanie is a real-time strategy game similar to Warcraft. There is only one non-linear campaign (25 missions) and the enemies use the same types of units. The only resource in the game is milk: everything - from buildings to defensive walls to bridges to new units - is built using a certain amount of it. Milk is produced by cows, which graze in the meadows surrounding your village. When they eat enough, the cows will return to their stables and the milk will be added to your resources. Woodcutters are needed to complete buildings ('bought' with milk), and act as axemen in combat. The high medieval setting is spiced with a touch of magic: your men (and enemies too!) can be healed in sacred places scattered around the map, priests and priestesses can invoke fire from the sky. Magical or nature creatures can provide help or annoyances. Large teams of warriors can be selected and controlled as a group.

The CD-ROM re-release added 3 new units, 5 short campaigns (in total 27 new missions), 3D animations and music on the audio tracks.

The German edition, titled Victory and based on the floppy disk release, goes beyond the obvious translation/dubbing changes and introduces a plot twist: the campaign map has changed from Polish to German territory in the background, so no Slavic tribes are joined anymore (the intro animation is also absent).

The Czech edition is based on the updated Polish CD-ROM reprint.
