Description Project-X Special Edition & F17 Challenge

Project-X Special Edition & F17 Challenge brings together two very different Amiga CD32 productions from Team17. Project-X is a fast horizontal shoot-’em-up set across hostile futuristic environments, while F17 Challenge places the player behind the wheel of a Grand Prix racing car. The compilation offers immediate arcade action alongside a more technical driving game, with each title demanding a different style of play. Project-X relies on reflexes, memorised routes and careful weapon use; F17 Challenge rewards controlled driving, preparation and consistency over a complete race meeting.

Project-X Special Edition sends a lone fighter craft through a succession of heavily defended stages. The screen scrolls continuously from left to right, filling with ground installations, airborne attackers, mechanical guardians and large end-of-level craft. Destroyed enemies release power-ups which improve the ship’s firepower, add different firing patterns or provide additional protection. Smart bombs clear substantial portions of the screen when the action becomes crowded, but their limited supply makes them valuable during difficult sections and boss encounters. The ship is quick to respond, although the narrow passages, moving obstacles and dense enemy formations leave little room for error. Several difficulty levels allow the game to serve as both a demanding arcade challenge and a more approachable introduction to its weapon systems.

The Special Edition presentation gives the shooter a polished, highly colourful appearance. Landscapes range from industrial installations and alien terrain to more abstract, heavily populated battle zones, with large sprites and frequent parallax movement creating a strong sense of forward progress. Explosions, enemy fire and power-up effects keep the screen in constant motion, while the compact craft remains clearly defined amid the action. The CD32 version supplies powerful sound effects for weapon fire, impacts and explosions, supported by energetic music that maintains the pressure between enemy waves. Extra lives, weapon upgrades and stage passwords help extend a campaign, but success ultimately depends on learning attack patterns and reaching each stage with the ship’s equipment intact.

F17 Challenge takes a more measured approach, presenting Formula One-style racing from a low viewpoint behind the car. Races demand attention to braking points, cornering lines and acceleration, with changes in speed and grip immediately apparent when the car is driven beyond its limits. The player can compete in individual events or work through a broader championship, adjusting the car before returning to the circuit. Qualifying positions influence the starting grid, while race distance, fuel considerations, tyre wear and pit-lane decisions add substance to the driving model. Circuits feature differing combinations of long straights, tight bends and fast curves, requiring a new approach from one track to the next. Rival cars maintain the pressure throughout the field, and a clean, carefully managed race can be more valuable than a reckless attempt at outright speed. Its detailed display, engine noise, trackside scenery and tense competition provide a convincing counterpart to Project-X’s explosive arcade style.
