Chicken
Atari 8-bit's Chicken is a video game released in 1982. The goal of Chicken is to navigate your chicken to the top of the screen while avoiding predators. The game has a relatively simple design, with several elements that add to the challenge, and provide plenty of entertainment.
Players control a chicken, which starts out at the bottom of the screen. The chicken needs to make its way up to the top, with obstacles along the way. Various predators, such as dogs and hawks, are chasing the chicken. The player has to navigate the chicken around these predators and find alternate routes if necessary. In addition to predators, there are other obstacles, such as hedges and creeks that have to be avoided, while gathering the eggs at the end.
The game introduces a variety of strategies to increase the challenge. You can quickly change directions, jump, fly, or drop eggs to distract the hawks and dogs. The game makes use of a simple two-button control scheme, making it easy for everyone to learn the game.
The visuals in Chicken are appealing, and colorful. The environment consists of a simple grid system, containing various objects. The eggs have a nice detailing to them, while the predators appear differently, depending on their behavior. The soundtrack for the game, while out of tune, is an appropriate complement to the gameplay.
The overall experience in Chicken can be quite enjoyable, and for a game released in the 1980's, it still holds up well today. The game gives players a sense of accomplishment for successfully evading the predators and getting the chicken to the top of the screen. It's a great game to pick up for a few minutes of nostalgic gameplay.
